A monoclonal antibody (mAb) is a type of immune protein produced in a lab that binds to a specific protein on a cell called an antigen. As with naturally occurring antibodies, monoclonal antibodies stimulate the immune system to act against disease-causing agents. The mAb (ibritumomab) delivers a radioactive substance (Yttrium-90) directly to cancer cells. Another example is Kadcyla, an mAb that is attached to a chemotherapy drug. Since lack of reactivity of T cells towards tumor cells can be attributed to CTLA-4, mAb therapy for anti-CTLA-4 effects represents a promising alternative for cancer therapy; such is the case of Ipilimumab, a human IgG1 mAb, indicated for melanoma and renal cell carcinoma [10].
