Has any building in Brixton been emptier longer than this big eyesore on Pope’s Road? This large office building adjacent to Brixton railway station has been slowly rotting away on Pope’s Road for decades. In the 1930s the venue was the Saville ballroom and billiards club, the Gresham ballroom and the Vincini academy of dancing before becoming the Brixton Palais de Dance in the 1940s and the Harlequin Irish club in the late 50s and early 60s. I thought it might be an idea to start a general thread for Brixton history, and to get it started, here's a photo of Atlantic Road in Edwardian times. I researched some of the shops in the picture - more here. Seeing this photo reminds me of how much Electric Avenue has fallen from grace.
