PASCH The Jewish feast celebrated annually at God's command to commemorate the deliverance of the Jews from the bondage of Egypt. As mentioned above, pascha is an Aramaic word, and scholars list it as connected to Pecach or Pacach, the Hebrew words for Passover. The Israelites would have referred to the feast and lamb as pecach or pacach since they spoke Hebrew, the language that most of the Old Testament is written in. The Saturday preceding the day of the Pasch (fifteenth) is called a “Great Sabbath “, because it is supposed that the tenth day of the month Abib (or Nisan), when the Israelites were to select the Paschal lambs, before their deliverance from Egypt, fell on a Sabbath. From later Biblical times the Passover, formerly sometimes called the Pasch (Heb. happesah, Gr. τὸπάσχα), celebrated on the night of the 14th to the 15th of Nisan (March or April), has been the principal feast of the Jewish calendar. The Pasch of Jesus and the Christian Pasch are thus set in the context which helped the apostles and first Christians to grasp their profound significance. Throughout all ages each one of us must regard himself as having come out of Egypt.
