Ein Jahr später verschwören sich sein Ziehsohn Brutus und 80 Senatoren gegen ihn: Mit 23 Messerstichen wird Caesar im Senat ermordet. Sein Name aber bleibt ein Sinnbild für Macht: Die Begriffe "Kaiser" und "Zar" leiten sich von Caesar ab. Nachdem Octavian seine Macht als erster Kaiser von Rom gefestigt hatte, ließ er Cäsar vergöttlichen und erklärte sich als dessen adoptierter Erbe zum Sohn Gottes und nahm den Namen Augustus Caesar, Kaiser, an. Damit leitete er das Ende der Römischen Republik und den Beginn des Römischen Reiches ein.
