Why Dittos Were The Most Iconic Brand Of The Seventies
The question is: why did the English adapt the name pineapple from Spanish (which originally meant pinecone in English) while most European countries eventually adapted the name ananas, which came from the Tupi word nanas (also meaning pineapple). Why the voiced /z/ won out over the voiceless /s/ is not clear to me. Modern French mostly uses /gz/, as in xΓ©nophobie, but I don't know the history of how the modern French pronunciation of word-initial x became established.
