Cienciano Vs Botafogo Lineups: Confirmed XI And Injury News For Copa Sudamericana Clash

The continental stage is set as Peru's altitude specialists, Cienciano, prepare to host Brazilian giants Botafogo in a highly anticipated Copa Sudamericana encounter on August 21, 2026. With both teams fighting for knockout stage positioning, securing the right tactical setup is crucial for survival. Managers on both sides have kept their tactical cards close to their chests, but late fitness tests have finally forced their hands.

Altitude Tactics and Selection Headaches in Cusco

Playing at over 3,400 meters above sea level presents a unique physical challenge for the visitors from Rio de Janeiro. Botafogo manager Artur Jorge has reportedly adjusted his training regimen to focus on oxygen conservation, suggesting a more conservative, counter-attacking formation. The Brazilian side will likely rely on high-pressing transitions but may rest some of their veteran players to avoid rapid fatigue.

On the other side, Cienciano aims to exploit their home advantage to the fullest. Under their current tactical setup, the Peruvian side thrives on stretching the play wide and forcing opponents to cover maximum ground. Their recent domestic performances in the Liga 1 show a team comfortable with high-intensity vertical passing, which will be the primary weapon against a potentially sluggish Brazilian defense.

Projected Lineups and Tactical Configurations

Both teams enter this fixture with minor injury concerns, forcing adjustments in the defensive units. Below are the projected starting lineups based on the final training sessions on August 20, 2026.

Projected Cienciano XI (4-2-3-1):

• Goalkeeper: Ítalo Espinoza
• Defenders: Josué Estrada, Paolo Fuentes, Germán Mera, Orlando Núñez
• Defensive Midfielders: Claudio Torrejón, Alfredo Ramúa
• Attacking Midfielders: Aldair Rodríguez, Abdiel Ayarza, Juan Romagnoli
• Forward: Carlos Garcés

Projected Botafogo XI (4-3-3):

• Goalkeeper: John Victor
• Defenders: Mateo Ponte, Bastos, Alexander Barboza, Cuiabano
• Midfielders: Marlon Freitas, Danilo Barbosa, Tchê Tchê
• Forwards: Luiz Henrique, Tiquinho Soares, Junior Santos

Botafogo's medical staff cleared Luiz Henrique just hours before the squad departed for Peru, giving the visitors a massive boost on the right wing. However, the physical toll of the Cusco altitude remains the ultimate wildcard for this lineup.
